South Moravian Region

Brno, Czech Republic

The South Moravian Region lies in the southeast of the Czech Republic on the border with Austria and Slovakia. The region is home to the Czech Republic’s second largest City, Brno, where the seat of the Regional Authority of the South Moravian Region and the regional headquarters are located. Brno is an important judiciary city and a university town with a long tradition in the organisation of trade fairs, which attract more than a million people from all over the world each year.

The region enjoys excellent transport links and holds a strategic position on the intersection of trans-European long-distance road and rail routes. Tuřany Airport in Brno is the second largest airport in the Czech Republic, with direct flights everyday to London, Munich and Prague, and more than 20 charter flights in the summer.

The South Moravian Region lies in second place in the Czech Republic in terms of the level of education it offers. There are 12 universities in the region, with more than 60,000 students.

South Moravia is a region with extensive cultural and historical roots and a great many important architectural monuments from all periods and in all styles. Two of these, Villa Tugendhat in Brno and Lednice–Valtice, have been placed on the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. UNESCO also protects two biosphere reservations in the region – Pálava and the White Carpathian Mountains. The Dyje Basin, one of the Czech Republic’s four national parks, is also found here. The protected landscape area, the Moravian Karst, offers visitors extensive systems of stalactite caves and the Macocha Gorge. Slavkov or Austerlitz, the site of the Battle of the Three Emperors, is also world-famous. In addition, the mammoth hunters left their footprints here at the dawn of human history (Dolní Věstonice), while other archaeological sites (Mikulčice for example) testify to the fame and fortune of the Great Moravian Empire.
