The Moravian Museum, the second largest and oldest museum in the Czech Republic, was founded in July 1817 by a decree of Emperor Francis I. The museum’s collections include over six million objects, representing valuable scientific material from the fields of literature, music and theatre; geology, mineralogy, botany, zoology and entomology. In addition to documenting scientific history, the museum organises a programme of temporary exhibitions, lectures and other activities, and also features a Children's Museum dedicated to the education and leisure of younger museum visitors.

The Moravian Museum is a contributory organisation of the Ministry of culture of the Czech Republic. A research oriented institution, its main task is to carry out basic and applied research, to disseminate its results by means of teaching, publications or technology transfer, within the framework of the museum’s activities.
