The spiritual life of the bourgeoisie was organised through the church, the guilds and various brotherhoods. Both the religiosity of the members and their desire for personal reward in the afterlife were reflected in various activities: assisting with burials by donating burial robes or making monetary donations; attending the burial mass; volunteering at local hospitals; organisation of and participation in religious fiesta days; the donation of dowries for local orphans; burying the dead during epidemics; along with many other charitable acts as deemed appropriate by confraternity members or the parish priest. The design, construction, furnishing and decoration of some churches were made possible purely through donations from citizens.
