Devotion and pilgrimage are focused on the cult of saints, who together with the Virgin Mary, are the protectors against evil and intercessors with God at the Last Judgment. People, cities, brotherhoods or professions had their own patrons, hence the custom of giving children several names, as it meant they had more patrons. To honour their patron saints, patrons would build churches and altars devoted to them, offer various gifts to them, and organise celebratory ceremonies in their name. In cities, processions, rather than pilgrimage, took place. The promotion of saints was among the chief tools of re-Catholicisation in rural areas.
