The theatre of the Church
There was a huge variety of religious festivities for the Baroque audience to enjoy. To celebrate the life of the Holy Family and saints Baroque audiences were invited to a huge variety of religious festivities and feasts, commemorating special days of the liturgical calendar, which often involved illuminations, music, processions and sermons. Among these were the Quarantore, a sacro spettacolo or dramatic theatre accompanied by illuminations and sermons, during which exceptional apparati were commissioned, often from some of the most significant artists of the time. In Rome, the papal Possesso involved the ceremonial procession following the coronation of a newly appointed pope. Another celebrationary feast was the Chinea. Among these and many other feast days and festivals was also the Giubileo or Anno Santo (Holy Year).
